چکیده

Exposure of plants to irradiances far above the light saturation point of photosynthesis, known as highlight stress, induces various responses including light adaptation of the photosynthetic apparatus and chloroplast ultrastructure by formation of sun-type chloroplasts. The latter possess a lower cross section for light absorption (less light-harvesting chlorophyll proteins) and higher rates of photosynthetic quantum conversion than shade-type chloroplasts. De-epoxidation of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin, increase in heat emission, rise of non-photochemical de-excitation of absorbed light quanta (qN) and photoinhibition of the photosynthetic pigment apparatus are further highlight stress responses. The degree of photoinhibition can clearly be determined via measurements of the chlorophyll fluorescence relaxation kinetics and depends on the pho-ton flux density of the highlight stress as is shown here with soybean leaves. A decrease in photochemical quenching qP and variable chlorophyll fluores-cence ratios F′ v /F′ m or ∆F/F′ m , and an increase of non-photochemical quenching qN are not yet an indication of a photoinhibition. One always has to determine the photoinhibitory quenching coefficient qI which is one of three qN components. However, in soybean leaves a photoinhibition (increase in qI) of the chloroplasts, as measured at the adaxial light exposed upper leaf side, did not affect the photosynthetic CO 2 assimilation rates (P N) of the whole leaf. Thus, chlorophyll fluorescence measurements, usually carried out with low irradiance light, taken at the upper leaf-side alone are not representative for the physiological situation of the whole leaf. Chlorophyll fluorescence signatures have to be determined as well from the abaxial lower leaf side in order to correctly judge the physiological state of the leaf. Abbreviations: Chl – chlorophyll; F v and F m – variable and maximum Chl fluorescence of PSII in the dark adapted state; F′ v and F′ m – variable and maximum Chl fluorescence in the light adapted state; F d – Chl fluorescence decrease from F m to F s at continuous illumination, F o – ground value of Chl fluorescence; F s – steady state Chl fluorescence 5 min after onset of illumination , P N – photosynthetic net CO 2-assimilation; PPFD – photosynthetic pho-ton flux density; PSII – photosystem II; qN – non-photochemical quenching coefficient of chlorophyll fluorescence; qP – photochemical quenching coefficient of Chl fluorescence; qI – non-photochemical quenching due to photoinhibition of photosystem 2; qT – non photochemical quenching due to state transitions; qE – non-photochemical quenching due to the build-up …

Inhibition of photosynthesis and energy dissipation induced by water and high light stresses in rice.

Photoprotection mechanisms of rice plants were studied when its seedlings were subjected to the combined stress of water and high light. The imposition of water stress, induced by PEG 6000 which was applied to roots, resulted in substantial inhibition of stomatal conductance and net photosynthesis under all irradiance treatments. Under high light stress, the rapid decline of photosynthesis with...

In vivo Microscale Measurements of Light and Photosynthesis during Coral Bleaching: Evidence for the Optical Feedback Loop?

Climate change-related coral bleaching, i.e., the visible loss of zooxanthellae from the coral host, is increasing in frequency and extent and presents a major threat to coral reefs globally. Coral bleaching has been proposed to involve accelerating light stress of their microalgal endosymbionts via a positive feedback loop of photodamage, symbiont expulsion and excess in vivo light exposure. T...

Contrasting effects of N and P deprivation on the regulation of photosynthesis in tomato plants in relation to feedback limitation.

The effects were studied of both nitrogen and phosphorus limitation and irradiance on the performance and operation of photosynthesis in tomato leaves (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Plants were grown at low N, high N, low P or high P supply and at two irradiances. Using mature leaves, measurements were made of the irradiance dependencies of the relative quantum efficiencies of photosystems I ...

The effect of salt stress on ion accumulation, photosynthesis and compatible solute contents in four grapevine (Vitis vinifera) genotypes

Salinity tolerance of four grape genotypes [GharaUzum, Hosseini, AghUzum and Keshmeshi] was studied under various salinity levels (25, 50 and 100 mM NaCl). As a result, growth indices were significantly (P<0.05) reduced by salinity, whereas Cl- and Na+ contents in the plant parts were increased. Cl- accumulation exceeded than that of Na+ in all treatments. Among the genotypes studied, GharaUzum...
